I remember college professors talking about these things called "values" and thinking "these are just fancy words."
Oh boy, was I wrong.
Personal Values |
People are the jam: Even in the worst times, I believe that we live in communities for a reason and people can be amazing. I also think that so much can be gained by pouring into the people around us and though it's simple in theory, it has to be intentional.
We share one Earth: We all share this one planet and all of the creatures on it, so it only makes sense to take care of it. Reduce, reuse, recycle, but also, respect this amazing, shared home.
We are all equal: Everyone brings something to the table and deserves to be accepted as their unique selves. Stereotypes are never good and because people are the jam, they are busting through those stereotypes all of the time.
Learn from everything: All experiences aren't pleasant, however they always present an opportunity for learning and growth. Failure is going to happen but it's how we choose to respond that makes the difference.
Laughter is soul food: It's truly a shame to take yourself too seriously, not to mention super boring. Feed your soul something good.

Consistency is key: People want consistency because it's something they can count on in their day. Change in general can be difficult, but inconsistent leadership or practices means changes are possible at any time, and that makes people really uneasy.
Show value: Again, people are the jam and when they feel valued, they do amazing things! Money, status, and benefits are amazing but if people don't feel valued, things quickly go downhill.
Tell the truth: There is a lot of respect to be earned from owning a situation and telling the truth. Plus, the truth always comes out so it's much better when it comes from the source with sincerity.
Make a plan, see it through: Successful organizations, especially those with a lot of people on their team, create and follow plans. It keeps the whole group going in one direction, focuses decision-making, and curbs surprises.
Zoom out: Everything affects something else and that means "zooming out" to see the big picture is imperative to moving an organization forward.
